president karzai met with chuck hagel for the first time. but karzai threw out some allegations that the taliban and the military want to keep that country up stable so the military can stick around. what's your take on what's going on there, senator? >> well, i'm afraid what president karzai said doesn't make any sense. it's contrary to our strategy. there's no effort by our forces and by our military to do what he suggests. unfortunately, he does this every couple of months. i do think, though, it's important that we emphasize the critical nature of our working together to get our troops out of there as fast as we can and to do it in a way that doesn't undermine or diminish the golal we've achieved. so far we've had great progress, but i think that if we keep engaging in arguments with president karzai, we're probably not going to get very far. as much as he seems to want to engage in those. it makes no sense, and i think he knows that. >> senator bob casey, good to have you on the program. thank you. >> thanks, chris. >>> you know, matt, if nothing else, i think you could say

hagel made a surprise visit to afghanistan this weekend. on that very first foreign trip chuck hagel arrived to afghanistan to the terrible news american contractor had just been killed by three people in afghan military uniforms. they managed to drive onto a u.s. base in the eastern part of the country and open fire. they shot and killed the american contractor and wounded others just hours before the secretary of defense landed in afghanistan. the following day, one day later, a big deal ceremony was planned to coincide with the secretary's visit. a year ago the u.s. agreed to hand over control of a big prison to the afghan government. bagram is the only prison technical run by the u.s. military designed to imprison people for the long term. u.s. was prison saturday. that was in the works for a year. journalists gathered for the ceremony, everyone was there. then suddenly it was cancelled. the military isn't saying why exactly it cancelled the handover of the prison. this week, karzai said he wanted to release a lot of those prisoners. the u.s. military says they have things to wor

the department of defense. kyla? >> reporter: i have been told that chuck hagel had already left afghanistan when she is two deadly shootings -- when these two deadly shootings happened today. nato officials confirm two u.s. troops were killed in eastern afghanistan today in a shooting at a police station. three other nato and afghan service members were also killed. they say somebody wearing an afghan national security services uniform opened fire. it's not known if he was an actual security service officer off someone just wearing the uniform. they are not releasing names yet until the next of kin is notified. the second shooting happened hours later and 75 miles away outside of the capital of kabul. a u.s. spokesperson says a truck was approaching a u.s. convoy and the driver was not following instructions given wipe u.s. troops. the troops opened fire and killed two afghan civilians. right now, the department of defense is not releasing any further details about either incident. live in washington, kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> 7:16. one of the men accused in a gang rape and fatal b

chuck hagel getting a crash course in a rocky relationship with afghanistan. his first official visit to the region and what a welcome from afghanistan's president hamid karzai. he's accusing our country of cooperating with the enemy to spread chaos across this country. just a little context for you here, and a reminder, not that you need it, we lost 2,170 american lives and more than 540 billion dollars spent over a decade trying to make life better for afghans with the taliban targeting any kind of help or hope we could give them during the war. the taliban of course killed countless people and previously provided safe haven for osama bin laden and today afghan president saying our military is working with the taliban. it appeared we might learn exactly why he said that. we've known president karzai to be rather unpredictable in the past. secretary hagel was supposed to hold a joint news conference today with the afghan leader, but then it was canceled for what were said to be security reasons. the two did meet, we're told, in private. peter doocy now with the news from washington.
